La Sarraz Castle
La Sarraz Castle, a seigniorial residence for centuries, has retained the atmosphere of a family estate. The Horse Museum was established there in 1982.
For nine centuries, la Sarraz Castle controlled "Défilé du Mauremont", a key passage on the road from Burgundy to Italy. It had always been the residence of the barons of La Sarraz.
"I would like to gather avant-garde architects from twenty countries in my castle," said Hélène de Mandrot-Revilliod, the last lady of the manor to Le Corbusier, thus occasioning the foundation of the International Congress of Modern Architecture (CIAM) in 1928.
The interior expresses the ambiance and the taste of several generations of a patrician family. Precious items of furniture, silverware and rare pieces of porcelain bear witness to refined table arts. These historical rooms can be hired for receptions, celebrations, balls and weddings.
In 1982, horse enthusiasts opened the Horse Museum in this historical setting. The museum collection contains saddles used by Napoléon 1st, the Grimsel postal coach, and horse sculptures. There are also explanations of the work of a ferrier or a veterinarian.
