Morges

The city of Morges benefits from a privileged situation on the bank of Lake Geneva, facing the majestic Mont Blanc. Morges and its castle live in the rhythm of the flowers throughout the year, especially in spring on the occasion of the Tulip Festival or the Dahlia Quay.

Morges, bloomy town of 14.000 inhabitants, has developed on the watersides of Lake Geneva, facing the majestic Mont Blanc. Its Grand Rue pedestrian zone in the centre of the old town accommodates animated markets and shops, where the restaurants serve the biggest appellation of the Vaud canton: the wine of Morges AOC.

The old town of Morges was founded by Louis of Savoy in 1286. Its picturesque old port, presently used by leisure boats, was one the most important trade port of the Lake Geneva in the end of the 17th century.

Dominating the Grand Rue and the port, the castle shelters the Military Museum of the canton of Vaud, the Artillery Museum, the Museum of the Historical Swiss Tin Figurine as well as the Museum of the Police Force. The castle, built in the shape of a Savoyard square, served as a residence for the Savoyards and then for the Bernese reeves (from 1536) until the Vaud revolution (1798).

Every year the Tulip Festival celebrates the return of spring. A hundred thousand tulips form gorgeous, colourful figures in the 30.000m2 Parc de l’Indépendance.

During the summer the Dahlia Quay decorates the waterside of Morges where “La Liberté” is anchored, the only Mediterranean galley of the Lake Geneva, touched down on water in 2002. Being 55 metres long, it was built by unemployed persons and provides now cruises to the visitors.
