Trees and the urban environment
To increase greenery across its territory, the City of Morges has adopted an ambitious strategy: to increase tree canopy cover from 17% to 25% by 2050. Tree canopy cover refers to the area covered by tree foliage — a key indicator for cooling the city and preserving biodiversity. In practice, this means planting more than 200 trees each year, on both public and private land. As the latter accounts for around 60% of the area, engaging private landowners will be crucial.
Consequently, the town has devised an original project: the Urban Nursery. Located in a public space, since September 2025 it has offered nearly a hundred trees in containers, all available for purchase at preferential prices. These plants, carefully selected for their resilience to climate change, allow every resident of Morges to contribute, from their own garden, to the collective greening effort.
Did you know? Between 2023 and 2025, the City of Morges planted over 500 trees on public land and on private communal plots. A considerable effort to provide the town with an ever-greener canopy!
