A tree-lined walk in Morges
The Tree Walk takes you through two of Morges’ most iconic parks on the shores of Lake Geneva. This educational trail, packed with interesting facts, offers the chance to learn more about certain trees and the public parks where they are planted.
Parc des Sports
In the past, this area served as peaceful pastureland for cows and sheep. In the 19th century, the site was used for archery and firearms training. Following the relocation of the shooting range, the park was converted into a horse racing track, hosting equestrian events that attracted up to 15,000 spectators! The park then opened up to other sports such as football, rugby, American football, tennis, pétanque, swimming and the pump track. This large open space also allows for the organisation of major events such as the cantonal gymnastics festival, a boxing match for the European championship title, hot-air balloon launches and even motor races.
Parc de l'Indépendance
Between 1845 and 1865, Independence Park was literally reclaimed from the lake: a boundary wall was built, then filled in, turfed over, and a few trees were planted there. In 1868, plans for a hotel were proposed, only to be abandoned a few years later. It was finally in 1884 that Jules Hugonnet – a confectioner and amateur botanist – and Eugène Buenzod – a local councillor – gave the park its current appearance, designing an English-style garden: winding paths, a wide variety of tree species in various shapes and colours, as well as architectural monuments that lend the place its timeless charm.
