Association Morges Fleur du Léman

at the heart of two major flower shows

Morges Fleur du Léman, an association at the heart of the Tulip Festival and the Dahlia Festival

Founded in 2012, the Morges Fleur du Léman association is dedicated to organizing two major events in Morges: the Tulip Festival and the Dahlia Festival. It receives a grant from the City of Morges as well as support from the Parks and Promenades Office.

In order to continue offering these two floral events completely free to the public, the association must self-finance approximately 80% of its budget. These resources come notably from sponsorship, flower bed sponsorships, the sale of bulbs and tubers, entertainment activities, fundraising dinners, the raffle, promotional items, and donations.

The association is run by an entirely volunteer committee, supported by a project manager and an event assistant (equivalent to 110% full-time), as well as by over 80 dedicated volunteers. It also has around ten private members who meet each year at the Annual General Meeting held in June.

Awarded the "2019 World Tulip Destination Worth Travelling For" award
The "World Tulip Society" is an association aiming to bring together all tulip stakeholders from parks and festivals around the world, as well as distributors and artists who have taken the flower as their model.

Every two years, the members of this association gather at the "World Tulip Summit" congress. This summit provides an opportunity to exchange ideas and celebrate the tulip, its history, and to create connections between the various stakeholders on the theme of the tulip.

The Fleur du Léman association was thus awarded the "2019 World Tulip Destination Worth Travelling For" award (Tulip destination worth visiting).

Intangible cultural heritage – or living traditions – encompasses oral traditions, customs, festivals, and the gestures and know-how of traditional crafts.

The Heritage Unit of SERAC manages the Cantonal Inventory of Intangible Heritage and supervises the work of the Cantonal Commission for Movable and Intangible Heritage (CCPMI). The latter reviews grants from the Cantonal Fund for Movable and Intangible Heritage and submits them to the Head of the Department of Culture, Infrastructure and Human Resources (DCIRH) for decision.

This is a platform that offers recommendations and tools for organizing events in a sustainable manner.

The current platform was born in 2017 from the merger of CI Manifestation Verte and ecosport.ch. CI Manifestation Verte was founded in 2006 by cantons and cities and focused on the theme of waste. Ecosport.ch was created in 2001 with the sponsorship of federal offices and Swiss Olympic and was dedicated to greater sustainability in sports events. Thanks to this merger, the platform was able to combine key expertise and offer valuable support to Swiss events of all kinds. Summit Foundation supports the development of the platform in French-speaking Switzerland.

Plantation bulbes tulipes

Planting the bulbs

Discover how the Tulip Festival bulbs are planted.

January – March (year preceding the Tulip Festival)
The gardeners of the City of Morges design the flower bed layouts. They take care to consider the flowering period of the different varieties present in the same bed, so that each composition is harmonious and successful.

Flower Bed Design Competition
As part of a 2nd-year course, the landscape gardening, horticulture, and nursery apprentices at the Morges Vocational Training Center each design a tulip bed. From the 100 creations presented, a jury selects certain beds that will then be planted in the Parc de l'Indépendance.
Two other beds are created by young people from Repuis and by employees of the Lavigny garden workshop, two associations that support young people in difficulty or with disabilities.

April – during the Tulip Festival
City employees evaluate the beds to verify whether the compositions and arrangements they imagined are successful. Each year, approximately 200 new varieties are chosen to offer visitors an unprecedented array of flowers.

September – October
The gardeners begin planting the tulip bulbs: They arrange the beds according to the established plans. They remove the grass, plow the soil, and level the flower beds. The bulbs are placed with the future stem facing upward, then buried at a depth of approximately three times their size.

During this period, schools come to help the gardeners, thus discovering the profession and the pleasure of working with flowers.

Online bulb sales

Sale of 60 bulb varieties throughout the festival, online, on the website www.flowerbulbs.ch. A QR code is present on the beds available for sale (in the park and in the city during the festival). Delivery will be made to your home and only in Switzerland at the end of September, and orders can be placed from mid-March to the end of May.
